Penetrations and fixings. Most solar panel systems in the UK use hook-mount fixings that penetrate the tile and fix to the rafter beneath. These penetrations are waterproofed with lead or EPDM flashings. The quality of this waterproofing is critical — poorly executed panel fixings are a consistent cause of water ingress around penetration points. Ensure the panel installer is using a professional roofer for the mounting element, not a general trade worker.
Warranty implications. Many roofing material warranties are conditional on no penetrations being made through the tile system without authorised fixing methods. Solar panels on a pitched roof are permitted development only where they project no more than 200mm from the roof plane and do not exceed the highest part of the roof excluding the chimney.

A green roof on a flat extension in East Yorkshire is a reasonable maintenance-reducing choice — the sedum layer protects the membrane from UV and temperature cycling, extending its service life. The structural requirement is the main constraint — older East Yorkshire extensions may not have the joists to carry the additional load, and a structural assessment is required before installation.
Roof Orientation and Realistic Output in East Yorkshire
East Yorkshire receives roughly 900–1,000 kWh per square metre of solar irradiance annually — lower than the south coast but entirely viable for domestic generation. A south-facing array at around 35 degrees, close to the typical pitch of Victorian and interwar housing across Beverley and Hull, sits near the theoretical optimum for the latitude.

Almost all UK domestic solar installations use roof hooks that pass between tile courses and bolt to the rafters, with the tiles refitted over them. The waterproofing depends on the hook being correctly aligned so that the tile above sits flat, and on the tile being trimmed rather than forced. Where a hook holds a tile slightly proud, wind-driven rain enters at that point — and because the array covers the area, the resulting damp is often not traced to its source for years.
On profiled interlocking concrete tile, which covers most of Hull and Beverley's post-war stock, this requires care but is straightforward. On natural slate it demands considerably more skill, because slate cannot be locally dressed around an obstruction. On pantile — the traditional covering around Driffield and the Wolds villages — the S-profile makes standard hooks unsuitable and specific pantile hooks are needed. Wind Loading and Estuary Exposure
A solar array is a large flat surface attached to a roof, and it changes the wind loading on that roof. Design should follow BS EN 1991-1-4 wind load calculations for the site, accounting for building height, terrain category and exposure. For most inland East Yorkshire property this is uncontroversial.
It becomes a genuine design question on the exposed coast at Hornsea and Withernsea, on the open Humber frontage at Hessle and Brough, and on elevated Wolds-edge sites. In these locations arrays should be set further back from ridge, eave and verge — the zones of highest uplift — and fixing centres tightened accordingly. An installer who quotes an identical layout for a sheltered Cottingham semi and an exposed Hornsea seafront property has not done the calculation.

A sedum green roof is a layered system: a root-resistant waterproof membrane, a protection layer, a drainage and reservoir board, a filter fleece, the growing substrate, and the sedum blanket or plugs. Extensive sedum systems — the type suited to domestic extensions — use 60–100mm of substrate and weigh roughly 60–150 kg/m² when fully saturated.
That saturated weight is the figure that matters structurally, and in East Yorkshire's rainfall it should be assumed rather than treated as a worst case. Many 1960s–80s extension roofs across the region were designed for minimal imposed load and will need joist strengthening. A structural engineer's assessment before committing to a green roof is not a formality — it is the difference between a viable project and a deflecting roof.
Maintenance and the Fire Regulation Question
Green roofs are low maintenance, not no maintenance. Two visits a year to clear the drainage outlets, remove any self-seeded woody growth and check the perimeter detail is the realistic commitment. A vegetation-free gravel margin at the perimeter and around any penetration keeps the drainage path clear and provides a fire break.
On solar, one further point is worth knowing: panels and their DC cabling remain live in daylight even when the system is switched off, and the fire service treats arrays accordingly. A clearly labelled and accessible DC isolator, and a roof plan showing the array layout, are part of a properly completed installation. Ask for both at handover along with your MCS certificate, which you will need for any export tariff and for a future sale.
Battery Storage, Export and the Whole-System View
Solar output and household demand rarely coincide, and in East Yorkshire a typical domestic array exports a substantial share of what it generates unless storage is added. Battery systems shift midday generation into the evening peak, and they change the economics of an installation considerably — but they also add cost, occupy space and have their own replacement cycle.
From a roofing perspective the relevant point is that batteries are usually housed in a loft, garage or utility space rather than on the roof, so they do not affect the roof design. What does affect it is planning the array size around realistic consumption rather than maximum roof coverage.
