When it cracks, rainwater enters the stack, runs down the inside of the flue, and penetrates into the bedroom ceiling or the upper floor wall adjacent to the chimney breast.

Flaunching failure is almost universal on Victorian and Edwardian East Yorkshire properties that haven't had recent chimney maintenance. Repointing — Lime Mortar vs Cement
