The October Gutter Clear: Non-Negotiable

Any of these spotted in October can be addressed before the gale season. Spotted in January after a storm has displaced what was already loose, the repair often costs two or three times as much.
Freeze-Thaw: The Mechanism Behind Winter Damage
Water expands by roughly 9% when it freezes, and that expansion inside a confined space generates considerable pressure. On a roof, the confined spaces are hairline cracks in ridge and verge mortar, the pores of a porous tile, and any gap in a flashing. Water enters during autumn rain, freezes on a cold night, expands and widens the space, then thaws and admits more water on the next cycle.
East Yorkshire typically experiences a substantial number of air frosts between December and March, and it is the number of freeze-thaw cycles rather than the absolute minimum temperature that does the damage. A winter oscillating around zero is harder on a roof than a colder one that stays frozen. Snow Loading and Drifting
Snow is not usually a structural concern on domestic East Yorkshire roofs, which are designed for the regional snow load, but two situations warrant attention. The first is drifting against an abutment — where a lower extension roof meets the main house wall, wind deposits drifted snow far deeper than the general fall, and the local load can be several times the average.

That standing water then finds its way under the tile lap and into the structure.
The cause is almost always a combination of inadequate loft insulation and inadequate ventilation, allowing warmth into the roof space. The remedy is therefore insulation and ventilation rather than roofing work — another reason the autumn insulation check matters. Ice dams are less common in East Yorkshire than in colder regions, but they do occur in prolonged cold spells and they are a reliable indicator that the roof space is losing heat.

A gutter that is partially blocked holds water, and standing water in a gutter freezes solid. In the loft, look for new damp patches on the membrane and check that insulation has not become wet.
Inside, check upstairs ceilings and the walls beside chimney breasts for new staining. Damage from a freeze-thaw cycle is usually small at the point of occurrence and grows rapidly under subsequent rain, so a March inspection followed by a spring repair is far cheaper than discovering the same defect in the following autumn after six months of water ingress.
Working Safely and Legally at Height in Winter
Winter roof work is legitimate and often necessary, but the conditions demand more care. Frost on a roof surface makes it treacherous regardless of the covering, wind loading on operatives and materials increases the risk substantially, and the short daylight window compresses the working day. Reputable contractors will decline to work in genuinely unsafe conditions, and a contractor willing to go up in any weather is not demonstrating commitment.
For homeowners, the relevant point is that emergency make-safe work can be carried out in conditions where a permanent repair cannot. A temporary fixed membrane covering can go on in weather that would rule out mortar work, lead dressing or a GRP application. This is the correct sequence in winter: make safe promptly, then programme the permanent repair for conditions that allow it to be done properly rather than forcing it through and having to repeat it.
